Image formats affect compatibility, transparency, visual detail and download size. There is no single best format for every image, so the right choice depends on what the file contains and where it will be used.
JPG
JPG is a common choice for photographs and complex colour gradients. Its compression can create small files, but repeated editing and saving may introduce visible artifacts. JPG does not support transparent backgrounds.
PNG
PNG preserves image data without lossy compression and supports transparency. It works well for logos, screenshots, diagrams and graphics containing sharp edges. Convert a photograph with the JPG to PNG tool when transparency or PNG compatibility is required, but remember that conversion cannot restore detail already removed by JPG compression.
WebP

Does conversion improve image quality?
Changing JPG to PNG does not restore detail removed by JPG compression, and converting a small image into a larger format does not create genuine resolution. Format conversion changes how existing pixels are stored and which features, such as transparency, are available.
Transparency and backgrounds
PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels. JPG cannot, so transparent areas must be filled with a colour—usually white—during conversion. Check logos, icons and product cut-outs against both light and dark backgrounds before publishing.
Browser and application compatibility
